Uno Mas Like Roberto Duran

I heard only yesterday that Alex Soria, singer songwriter formerly of the Nils and Chino, was struck by a train and killed monday night in St. Henri, Montreal.

Though I was never particularly close with Alex, we played shows together on various occasions back in the day and bumped into each other around town from time to time. One of our first two Montreal shows with the Doughboys was opening for the Nils at Foufounes, and our first trip to Toronto was also with the Nils at Lee's Palace. The news of hhis death cast me into a pretty depressed mood all day and I had a good cry while driving to pick up Clem at school in the afternoon. I was listening to "Uno Mas" from the Mag Wheel Chino CDEP and just had to let it out. I mean, Alex was the most gentle, softspoken person. His music touched so many people. The guy played in bands since he was like 12 years old and couldn't have been more than sixteen or seventeen when that "Scratches and Needles" song first came out. I guess you could argue that that is a long time to be struggling in the long dark tunnel, but it just tears me up to think of it all adding up to being hit by a train in the prime of your life.

Maybe I'll add some more later, but that's about all I can manage right now. I hear there is a photo and something written about him in today's Montreal Gazette and am off to grab a copy somewhere if I can.
